Royal visit at BioMar Research Centre

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark got an insight into aquaculture research and development activities at the North Sea Science Park in Hirtshals, Denmark.

On its summer cruise throughout Denmark the Royal Danish Yacht brought Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary to Hirtshals. The visiting program for the 25th of August 2011 included a guided tour at the BioMar Research Centre.

Crown Prince Frederik paid visit to three of the business units that are working under the roof of the North Sea Science Park. The North Sea Science Park is internationally recognized for its expertise on research, resource management, monitoring, development and training on subjects related to fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic environment.

It was an honour and a pleasure to host the Crown Prince and to have the opportunity to explain, how Denmark contributes to the sustainable development of aquaculture.

Since 1992 the BioMar Research Centre forms part of the institutions, businesses and organizations gathered in this excellent test- and research environment for aquaculture issues.

During the visit at the BioMar Research Centre managing director of BioMar A/S Lars Rahbæk, Senior Scientist Jørgen Holm and manager of BioMar Research Centre Per Michael Sonnesen informed His Royal Highness about BioMar and how BioMar contributes to a future-oriented development of aquaculture. The Research Centre provides an excellent example of BioMar’s continuous and targeted investments in research and development. These initiatives secure our aim to always deliver the best feed solutions to the market, considering the financial and environmental performances of the feed.

Aquacultures role in global food supply

The Crown Prince got an impression of the impact of aquaculture for global food supply. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector, worldwide. According to FAO the global aquaculture production reached 52 million tons in 2008 and until 2030 it is expected to increase by further 40 million tons.

During his visit the Crown Prince got to know how BioMar focuses on environment, sustainability and traceability in order to be on track when it comes to comply with the increasing demands for fish feed.

Crown Prince Frederik had an introduction to, how tests are carried out at the Research Centre. These tests secure that future fish feed is being utilized the most optimal way and contributes to the production of high quality food.
