BioMar inaugurates new experimental farm in Greece

The BioMar Group inaugurated this summer a new experimental farm in Greece. The primary objective of the farm is to determinate with greater precision the Feed Conversion Rate of different feed types for Mediterranean fish species raised in net cages – and thereby also to evaluate the economic performance of the different feed types.

The design and location of the new trial farm has been chosen so that conditions are as close as possible to the conditions experienced in commercial fish farms in the Mediterranean Sea. The new farm is located in an island about 100 kilometres from Athens in an area with a great number of commercial fish farms.

The trial farm consists of 18 small net cages in a 3x6 formation. This design makes it possible to make precise and continuous measurements of the different production parameters and test up to six different feed types at the same time with a statistically valid trial structure.

The trials in new farm will focus on studies of performance differences between different feed recipes, studies of the effect of the use of alternative raw materials in the feed recipes, and studies of the effect of different feeding strategies.

The new trial farm is a joint initiative between BioMar and Dias Aquaculture S.A. – one of the leading Greek fish farmers.
