Reducing farm impact

BioMar has a long history as a pioneer in reducing the environmental impact from fish farming. Already in 1987 BioMar introduced the Ecoline product range – the world’s first environmentally declared fish feed. The Ecoline feed set a new standard in the industry and has been continuously improved since then.

In BioMar we see the reduction of farm impact as an important mean to facilitate continued growth for the aquaculture sector, especially in the land based aquaculture, where scarce water resources need to be preserved and protected. Environmental regulation has over the last years in many countries lowered the limits for the acceptable amounts of nutrients in the waste water. BioMar therefore focuses on developing feeds with an optimal balance of nutrients, so that the fish utilises a maximum of the nutrients in the feed for growth, while a minimum of nutrients are lost to the water. A more efficient uptake of nutrients in the fish does not only benefit the environment, but it also improves farm economy.

BioMar actively works in promoting new environmentally friendly farm technologies through e.g. technical support to fish farmers, seminars, and magazines. BioMar also pursues an active dialogue with regulating authorities in order to reach workable compromises securing the production of healthy food in an economic and environmentally friendly manner.
