Aquaculture - a growth industry

It is becoming increasingly trendy to eat fish, and the global fish consumption is increasing year by year. The main reasons are both the variety of delicious meals, which can be prepared with fish and the fact that fish is considered healthy food.

Fish is a vital source of proteins, minerals, and healthy fatty acids, and organisations such as FAO expects a significant increase in demand for fish over the coming years as a result of growing world population and increased income levels combined with an increasing amount of easy-to-prepare fish products from the processing industry.

While wild catch of fish generally are experiencing limitations due to growing concerns for overfishing of natural fish stocks, aquaculture holds a huge potential for increased production both of species already present in aquaculture and to new species being introduced in aquaculture.
