BioMar seek to collaborate and form mutually beneficial partnerships with organisations to help achieve our vision to develop and deliver truly efficient, sustainable, and healthy feed solutions. Partnerships are key drivers in any industry and the catalyst for innovative solutions through combining expertise, resources and capabilities. Since commencing operations in Australia, BioMar have collaborated and formed partnership with multiple companies who all align with our goals and vision to support sustainable aquaculture. Each organisations we partner with brings different knowledge and perspectives to the relationship, allowing us to develop new solutions and continue to innovate aquaculture.
Partnership drives development
In today’s fast paced and rapidly changing environment, collaborating and forming partnerships is more important than ever. Partnerships drive innovation, offering organisations the opportunity to combine resources, knowledge, and expertise to produce innovative solutions and accelerate industry-wide development. Aquaculture is a science-based industry that is heavily regulated making it more challenging to implement new changes. New developments in feed and aquaculture require extensive research with proven results before they can be implemented at a large scale. This is to ensure they do not cause harm to the fish or surrounding environment and comply with all regulations in place. Collaborating and forming partnerships can fast track this process, as organisations can combine their resources to test, measure and prove that the new developments are sustainable and will benefit the industry.
Key partnerships in Tasmanian
When forming partnerships, BioMar seek companies who align with our values and provide complementary capabilities. By choosing companies who share our goals, we can work towards common objectives to provide innovative solution. We empower our employees to engage in external relations and we share knowledge to support mutual growth. Since commencing operations in Australia, we have collaborated with numerous farming, logistics and other local companies for initiatives that will benefit Tasmanian aquaculture. Below are just a few of the key partnerships we have formed over the last few years in Australia.
Huon Aquaculture (Huon) began farming in Tasmania in 1986. Huon’s 35+ years’ experience farming in Tasmania’s unique conditions perfectly complete BioMar’s 60 years of experience specialising in aquafeed, forming a strong partnership that will drive sustainable development for years to come. In partnership with Huon, we run multiple feed trials here in Tasmania. BioMar utilise both Huon’s sea-based trial facility located at Hideaway Bay and their freshwater facility located in New Norfolk. This allows us to test diets throughout a salmon’s entire life cycle, from a young smolt to harvest. When conducting feed trials, we aim to:
- Improve Product Performance.
- Improve fish health.
- Improve our feeds sustainability profile.
- Recipe optimisation.
- Test new raw materials.
Feed is responsible for the largest environmental impact in the production of aquaculture. Developing better performing and more sustainable feed is crucial to further increase the sustainability of the industry. Combining Huon’s expertise in farming in Tasmanian waters and our knowledge in feed development, we can continue to run feed trials to optimise our feeds performance and sustainability in Australia.
Mitchell Plastic Welding
BioMar know that sustainability extends beyond our feed. We must look at our whole value chain to identify opportunities where we can improve the sustainability of our operations both upstream and downstream. This thinking led to BioMar Australia’s partnership with local Tasmanian business, Mitchell Plastic Welding (MPW). MPW have a long history of servicing Tasmania’s aquaculture sector and proven capabilities in delivering advanced manufacturing, plastic fabrication / repair products and services. In November 2021, BioMar Australia and MPW joined forces to launch our circular bags initiative. The initiative will see our bags transformed into 100% recyclable pallets, creating a circular economy and capturing value that would have otherwise been lost. By creating a circular economy with our bags, we are actively minimising waste and delivering other positive environmental outcomes.
Creating a reliable delivery service is extremely important in aquafeed. At the other end of our products are live animals, who require our feed to live a healthy life. Failure to deliver our feed can put the fish’s welfare at risk. The pandemic caused unforeseeable changes to shipping. Port congestions, consistent delays and shipping container shortages were just part of a larger issue that made reliable delivery to our customers outside of Tasmania more challenging. That is why this year we partnered with Move Logistics to provide a direct trans shipping line to our New Zealand customers. Our partnership with Move Logistics will streamline our delivery service to our NZ customers and mitigate risk in supply chain, allowing us to supply our NZ farming customers with a consistent supply of feed. Not only does this new direct service make for a faster, cheaper and ultimately more efficient supply chain, having one trusted logistics partner also reduces complexity and risk for our business.
