Systematic assemblage of documentation
In the research department at BioMar, we wanted to investigate whether the positive health effects also yield measurable effects on the ability to combat disease in salmon and for this reason we have carried out a series of studies focusing on cardiac health.
Initially, an infection experiment was carried out with PRV (Piscine orthoreovirus) which is associated with the disease HSMI (heart and skeletal muscle inflammation) and damage was recorded to, inter alia, heart muscle cells.
The significant effect recorded in that experiment was that of feed composition on fish health, and this was also verified in a number of field trials carried out with customers. This effect was further investigated in the swim tunnel called “The Flume”.
BioMar is now working, in collaboration with Nofima, on developing a model for heart disease that can effectively detect the effect of feed on heart health.
