Cameroon: Ministerial visit

Doctor Taiga, the Minister of Fisheries & Aquaculture of Cameroon visits Agro World Group, BioMar feed distributor.

On the 15th September, the Minister of Fisheries & Aquaculture of Cameroon, Doctor Taiga, visited Agro World Group, BioMar feed distributor in Cameroon, at their fry production site located on the Dibamba river banks. The Minister was accompanied by all the Directors of Cabinet involved in the development and support of aquaculture in Cameroon.

During his visit, the Minister explained to the journalists that aquaculture is from now on part of the emergency plans of Cameroon. It will be another few months before everything falls into place but Cameroon is on the right path.

M. Kamgo, owner of Agro World Group (www. agroworldgroup.com), was the very first in Cameroon to engage in the implementation of fish farming projects. He also manages the design and the construction of the facilities.

M. Kamgo has founded a school of aquaculture which aims to train future employees of the aquaculture industry. Furthermore, M. Kamgo sells selected fry, farmed in his local hatcheries.

In February 2018, at the 52nd edition of the National Youth Day, M. Kamgo was awarded "The Award of Youth Excellence", by the Minister of Youth Affairs, in recognition of his multiple efforts to develop aquaculture.

Focus on the modernization of fish farming
The pan-African financial institution stated, that on the 12th of September 2018, the board of directors of the African Development Bank Group agreed to approve a loan of 84 million Euros (a little over 52 billion CFA francs) to the Cameroun government to support the modernization of farming of beef, pork and fish in the country.

For aquaculture, the modernisation focus will be on farming, conservation, storage, and processing.

Whilst the project has a national scope, the Cameroon government has identified three main target areas:The North-West region for production and Central and Coastal regions for consumption.

Key beneficiaries of the project will be stockbreeders and their cooperatives who constitute 45 % of the labour force in the pastoral sector. Other beneficiaries include fish farmers, input producers and sellers, traders, female wholesale fishmongers and processing operators.

In addition, it has been said that "up to 350 higher education graduates will be trained and set up as business leaders".

The total cost of the project is estimated at 99.27 million Euros (65.113 billion CFA Francs). The bank will provide a loan of 84 million Euros (55.100 billion CFA Francs), whilst the Cameroun government will mobilize nearly 15.27 million Euros (10 billion CFA francs).
