Bactocell

Fish health is strongly dependent on the internal microflora (a combination between “good” and “bad” bacteria) which helps in nutrient uptake and protect fish from pathogens. The probiotic Bactocell® can modulate the gut microflora by changing the balance between “good” and “bad” bacteria, outcompeting the “bad bacteria” and creating a healthier environment in the intestines. This is the first step that triggers several beneficial effects on:

B-Wyse

B-WYSETM (BioMar Whole Yeast Synergistic Extracts), is a multi-strain yeast fraction that have proven stronger, synergistic effect than a single yeast strain.

GUT INTEGRITY AND SKIN MUCUS

To fight off pathogenic microorganisms, the skin cells and their secretion, the mucus, acts as a barrier between the fish and the environment.

Fish are surrounded by a continuous layer of mucus which is the first physical, chemical and biological barrier between fish’s skin cells and pathogens*.

Similarly, the gut is also a barrier between the outside and inside of the fish, where nutrients are absorbed, water and ions transported in and out, becoming one of the main entrances for pathogens, that can cause inflammatory reactions.

One component of the barrier is the mucus layer, produced by goblet cells in the gut epithelia. As the gut secretes antimicrobial substances, and has immune cells that produce antibodies, bacteria get trapped in the mucus and are kept away.

Beneath the mucus layer, lies the microvilli, membrane protrusions of the epithelian cells of the gut which provide increased surface for nutrient absorption and create also themselves a physical barrier to keep pathogenic bacteria from getting too close to the gut cells.

Skin and gut barriers can be enhanced/supported through specific functional ingredients in the feed.

Especially Bactocell® and B-WYSETM have demonstrated to contribute in several ways improving gut integrity, stimulating mucus production (skin, gills) and showing enhanced binding activity toward undesirable bacteria in the gut, blocking and removing them.

The innate immune system of fish is considered to be the first line of defence against a broad spectrum of pathogens and is
particularly important for fish. After 8 weeks of feeding, serum lysozyme activity was significantly higher in trout fry (15g) fed on feed with Bactocell® than in those ones feeding on control feed without Bactocell® treatments*.

Lysozyme is an important defence molecule of the innate immune system, and destroys pathogenic bacteria by disruption of their cell walls. They are present in mucus, lymphoid tissue, lasma and other body fluids of freshwater and marine fish, and can destroy. In the same trial other immune-innate responses to fight off pathogens such as alternative complement and respiratory burst activity were also significantly increased in the Bactocell®.

INFLUENCING ANTIOXIDANT STATUS

Research shows that antioxidants are necessary for survival and growth of the fry. Bactocell® has shown to have influence on genes that control the immune system and counteract oxidation. By decreasing the amount of oxidative stress on the immune system, the immune system will cope better with infection.

BioMar’s fry feeds come with extra vitamin and raw materials that are natural source of antioxidants, all of them well-known by their powerful antioxidant effect, which reduces cell damage from free radicals and contributes to growth.

Strong documentation demonstrated that Bactocell® reduces the occurrence of vertebral deformities across fish species with a big positive impact on the fry production itself and into the economical part of it by reducing the cost related to deformities.

In fact, Bactocell® is the only probiotic approved by the European Commission for inclusion in fish feed and the approval was based on this well demonstrated effect.

INICIO PLUS - BETTER RESISTANCE AGAINST BIOLOGICAL CHALLENGES

INICIO PLUS

The effectiveness of functional feed ingredients can be directly tested in disease challenge experiments, i.e. controlled trials in which specific diseases are introduced to healthy fish.

RAINBOW TROUT FRY SYNDROME (RBTS)

The updated INICIO Plus has shown to improve resistance against RTFS (Rainbow Trout Fry syndrome), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum.

After a challenge trial with Flavobacterium psychrophilum, the updated INICIO Plus showed a decrease of 30% points against the INICIO control, and 15% points decrease against INICIO Plus Control (previous to the update) in this trial with 5 g trout juveniles after 6 weeks of feeding.

CONFIRMATION FROM FIELD CONDITIONS

These results were also confirmed in field trials. During a 3 months trial testing the new INICIO Plus feed, trout fry showed a 39% reduction of the total mortality throughout the full trial in comparison with the previous INICIO Plus.

A 13.7 % mortality reduction was also seen in another trial with fish fed an equivalent test feed as the updated INICIO Plus, in comparison with the previous INICIO Plus, during a flavobacterium outbreak.

After a challenge trial with Yersinia ruckerii (bath) the trout fed for 4 weeks before the challenge with the health ingredients included in the updated INICIO Plus, had a significantly increased survival (+12%) compared to the control group.

The initial body weight was approx. 20 g, the weight at challenge approx. 32 g and the end weight was approx. 53g (survivors).
