BioMar feed bags recycled into a playground
At the beginning of 2019 BioMar Ecuador launched a recycling feed bag campaign called "Bags filled with ...". In Ecuador recycling is a relatively new idea and normally most empty feed bags are discarded ending up in landfill and potentially contaminating the environment. This program was designed to inspire a new way of circular economy thinking by giving feed bags a second life by transforming them into a playground.
To help shrimp farmers understand that plastic waste can be a valued resource we purchased back the used feed bags. Around 600,000 bags were collected that were transformed into recycled plastic or "plastic wood" and convert into a playground. Through this process BioMar helped remove 120 tons of equivalent C02 which is comparable to taking 20 cars out of circulation for one year.
Just before Christmas the playground made of BioMar feed bags was delivered to a local school in the community of Puerto Bolívar, providing a space for healthy recreation to the children from public schools without resources.
BioMar will continue this program in Ecuador where we hope to build another playground made of BioMar feed bags for the Manabi community, as we spread the message about the benefits of recycling and circular economy thinking.
