BioMar wins environmental award

BioMar Chile proved to be worthy of a national environmental award for its commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development.

The Chilean National Environmental Prize is awarded annually by the Chilean Foundation Recyclápolis together with the newspaper El Mercurio and Pontifical Catholic University of Chile as a way to recognize companies or institutions committed to environmental preservation and sustainable development.

In 2016, participants from over 120 projects nationwide participated and BioMar Chile was honoured with a first place in the Air Category for its project "A sustainable aquaculture, our legacy and commitment to Chiloé Island".

The ceremony was held start October in Santiago, at the Central House of the Catholic University of Chile, and was attended by the Minister of the Environment, Paul Badenier, and by David Rockefeller Jr. and Kristine Tompkins, renowned activists for the preservation of nature and environment in Chile.

Through its project BioMar Chile managed to minimize its carbon footprint to more than half. This was accomplished by replacing a heater used to generate steam in the feed production plant in Castro, and by this going from the use of fossil fuels as an energy source to the use clean and renewable biomass.

- In BioMar we are dedicated to innovation in aquaculture and our commitment is based on a sustainable industry with minimal environmental impact. We are proud to be recognized nationally for our project, enabling us to deliver a better quality of life for families Castro, Dalcahue and Putemún, said Eduardo Hagedorn, Managing Director of BioMar Chile.

- We are proud to be honoured for our efforts. This is a very important recognition for the aquaculture industry as a whole, as it allows us to publicize initiatives that BioMar and many other companies in the industry are taking to minimise environmental impacts. They care about the economic development of the region and take responsible actions without making much noise out of their efforts, Eduardo Hagedorn added.
