Measures to combat salmon lice
In order to be able to increase production with increased sustainability, the challenge is to solve the problem of lice without using polluting chemicals or methods that damage fish health or reduce the quality of the fish. Initiatives being investigated include cages at sea, closed cages and multi-biological systems.
Current measures to combat salmon lice are:
- Synchronised delousing
- Fallowing
- Use of cleaner fish
- Permaskirt (seals cages against the surface stream where the salmon lice live)
Technology being tested is:
- Louse flushing, including with freshwater
- Louse lasers and ultrasound
- "Lighting at depth" and underwater feeding (to reduce exposure time at the surface)
