Did you know aquafeed is responsible for up to 80% of carbon emissions in farmed aquaculture? Therefore, to create the most efficient and sustainable aquaculture industry possible, feed companies must lead from the front and reduce carbon emissions. At BioMar has we pledged our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aligning our operational targets with the 1.5°C pathway to ensure we continually work on reducing our carbon emissions.
Like many companies, BioMar measures our carbon footprint through the greenhouse gas protocol, which categorises emissions into three different scopes:
Scope 1 – refers to all direct emissions from the companies owned sources.
Scope 2 – refers to indirect emissions from purchased energy.
Scope 3 – incorporates all indirect emissions that occur in the value chain of operations.
The greenhouse gas protocol allows BioMar to track, quantify, and validate our GHG emissions, which is essential for developing strategies to lower our GHG emissions. In 2023, BioMar successfully reduced our scope 1 & 2 emissions by 15.3% and scope 3 by 12.5%. Of the three categories, scope 3 often accounts for the largest share of companies' emissions, and BioMar is no exception. Scope 3 is also the most difficult to reduce and control due to the need to work with all companies involved in the value chain.
Despite the challenges of reducing scope 3 emissions, BioMar is committed to leading from the front and working with our suppliers and customers to reduce scope 3 emissions. This is because, like you, we care about a greener future and we care about sustainable aquaculture.
