Land Animal Proteins (LAPs)
Land Animal Proteins (LAPs) are raw materials that are derived from terrestrial farming industries such as poultry. LAPs are an important part of our raw materials basked in Australia for both nutrition and sustainability. LAPs contain nutrients such as protein and fats and are often used to supplement or replace proteins like fish meal. However, importantly, LAPs are sources from waste streams of terrestrial farming, forming a circular economy and significantly improving the sustainability of both land-based agriculture and sea-based aquaculture.
Around 30% of all food production is wasted, so by utilsing these waste streams we are repurposing nutrition that would otherwise go to waste. Circular thinking will be crucial to helping BioMar achieve our goals of utilsing more circular and restorative feed ingredients in feed and decoupling feed from direct competition with human food production.
A good example of LAPs in feed is feather meal. Feathers represent anywhere from 3-7% bodyweight of poultry. Globally, billions of chickens are produced every year, however the feathers are not used for human consumption and instead go to waste. Instead of allowing the feathers to go to waste we can utilise them as a source of protein in our feed. LAPs pose no danger to human health. All animal feed in Australia is rigorously controlled by the federal government. Fish and crustaceans are not fed unprocessed poultry products. All poultry product ingredients we use are human-grade by-products and certified. LAPs will typically come to us in the form of ground-down powder with a flour-like texture
At BioMar, LAPs will continue to play an important role in feed formulation, because we care about circular thinking and we care about sustainable aquaculture.
