BioMar Australia’s feed is made from a range of different raw materials. Due to their high-quality protein concentration, high digestibility and amino acid composition, marine-based ingredients such as fish meal and fish trimmings make excellent additions to aquafeed, provided they are sourced responsibly. This is why BioMar require all source fisheries to pass our BioMar Due Diligence Assessment Methodology (BioMar DD) for marine ingredients, be enrolled in a verified Fishery Improvement Project, or be certified to an ISEAL standard, ensuring sustainably source all our marine ingredients.

While making excellent feed ingredients, BioMar has successfully reduced the use of marine ingredients in our feed over the last 30 years. With increasing pressure on wild fish populations, we recognised our obligation to be part of the solution and help relieve pressure on wild fish stocks in our oceans. At BioMar, we have specifically focused on reducing marine ingredients derived from wild fish and substituting them with sustainable alternatives such as vegetable proteins, algal oil, and fish trimmings.

In 2024, BioMar Group recorded a record-low Foraged Fish Dependency Ratio (FFDR) of 0.67, achieved through the overall lower inclusion of marine ingredients, higher trimmings share, and several new partnerships launched within circular marine by-products.

We will continue to ensure that all marine ingredients used in our feed are sourced from sustainable suppliers. We will also identify opportunities to find sustainable alternatives to marine ingredients derived from wild fish because, like you, we care about our ocean's health, our environment, and sustainable aquaculture!
