BioMar demonstrates positive trial results on large rainbow trout

The purpose of this trial was to document and compare the feed formulation effect and performance on large rainbow trout. Two BioMar diets were investigated against one diet from a competitor (Named: Competitor A) and the full trial was conducted under controlled conditions and following a standard procedure.

The feeding level throughout this trial was above recommended feeding level (ad libitum), with feed waste observed. The total economic performance measurements indicate that both BioMar diets have a better overall score compared to Competitor A.

BioMar product: EFICO Enviro 923 Advance 6mm pellets & Blue Impact 9024 6mm pellets

Competitor A product: Anonymized 7mm pellets

Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)

FCR represents kilograms of feed needed to produce one kilogram of fish. Focusing on low FCR has tremendous farm benefits including reduced feed intake, minimum waste, reduced water pollution, lower oxygen demand and higher profitability for the farmer. In conclusion, this analysis illustrates the primary indictor for feed efficiency and BioMar’s Efico Enviro 923 Advanced and Blue Impact 9024 results were significantly better on FCR with respectively 0.99 and 0.96 in comparison to Competitor A on 1.03. Lower FCR indicates better feed efficiency, as less feed is required to achieve the same weight gain.

Specific Growth Rate (SGR)

Fish growth is generally described as SGR (Specific Growth Rate) that indicates the daily growth as a percentage. Growth rate is a particularly important characteristic in farmed species, and faster growth rate contributes in many ways to profitability. Maximum growth is a strong success criterion for many commercial fish farmers, particularly if energy costs related to the production are high. When reviewing the visual illustration, the trial results clearly outlined the growth rate on BioMar products was found to be significantly higher than the competitor feed. BioMar obtained an SGR of 1.24 on growth rate for both products compared to 1.13 on competitor A.

The jet platform – efficient and simple oxygen enrichment

The oxygen content of the water is often the most prominent limiting factor in intensive fish farming. It is a well-known fact that poor oxygen content means that it is not possible to utilise the full potential of both the fish and the feed. A jet platform is an example of an efficient and yet simple mechanical method for oxygen enrichment of water.

Trials: The essential tool for choosing the right feed

Selecting the right feed is critical for achieving production goals on a fish farm. Conducting feed trials directly on the farm is the most effective way to identify the best option. BioMar helps guide this process.

    Ensuring optimal oxygen levels

Just like humans, fish need certain levels oxygen to thrive. Sub-optimal oxygen levels may have consequences on the well-being of the fish and consequently on the economic outcome of a fish farm. Active observation and assessment are required to take the necessary actions in good time.
