BioMar Iberia has launched a pilot project to incorporate wheat sourced from regenerative agriculture into aquaculture feed formulations for 2026. To our knowledge, this pilot developed in collaboration with CEFETRA, is one of the earliest initiatives to introduce regenerative raw materials into aquafeeds within the European Union. It represents a concrete step towards the BioMar Group’s objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of circular and restorative raw materials in our products.

Population growth continues to drive global food demand. In 2022, aquaculture accounted for more than half of aquatic animal consumption, surpassing extractive fishing. While aquaculture is highly efficient in feed conversion, more than 80% of the sector's emissions come from raw materials. Reducing these emissions and strengthening the supply chain are essential.

BioMar and Cefetra address this challenge by comminating their expertise in agriculture and aquaculture. Their collaboration aims to reduce emissions at source, facilitate the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices, and improve the connection between agricultural production and aquaculture value chains.

“This pilot represents a real opportunity to improve the environmental impact of our raw materials,” says Rocío Álvaro González Sustainability Leader at BioMar West Mediterranean. “Wheat from regenerative agriculture provides verified CO₂ reductions and enables us to advance in the tangible restoration of soils.”

Throughout 2026, BioMar Iberia will evaluate the scalability of supply and assess the potential for broader integration of regenerative ingredients in future formulations.

“Our objective is to establish a broader agreement for the 2026-2027 campaign and move towards a consolidated supply of raw materials from circular economy for the region” emphasizes Sebastián Díaz Montecinos – Purchasing Director of BioMar West Mediterranean.

Driving traceability and collaboration in regenerative agriculture

CEFETRA, an international supplier of plant-based raw materials with a strong presence in European cereal markets, has worked closely with BioMar to harmonise methodologies in line with recognised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) frameworks. This collaboration ensures that emission reductions are quantified using robust and transparent approaches.

“For CEFETRA, this project with BioMar is an example of how regenerative agriculture can scale up when farmers, suppliers and manufacturers work in coordination. Our focus is to continue expanding the availability of wheat from regenerative agricultural practices and ensure robust traceability throughout the supply chain.” says Gabriel del Toro, National Cereals Trading – CEFETRA

This support enables BioMar Iberia to communicate the project transparently and ensure that the data reflects real and verified improvements.

Looking ahead: Towards aquaculture with lower emissions and greater restoration.

BioMar positions itself as one of the pioneers in the introduction of regenerative ingredients for aquaculture feed within the European Union, promoting the reduction of environmental impact, restoring soil, protect biodiversity and preserve agricultural ecosystems. Throughout 2026, BioMar Iberia will continue assessing the scalability of supply and the potential integration into a broader portfolio of regenerative ingredients for the region.
